Casper College to host celebration of art, music tonight

CASPER, Wyo. — The public is invited to a free evening of beautiful art and music at Casper College’s reception for the new exhibit “Virginia Held: Works Created, Works Collected” at the Mildred Zahradnicek Art Gallery. The reception is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m.

The reception will be followed by “A Copland Celebration,” a 7 p.m. concert in the Wheeler Concert Hall.

“Held’s talent in visual art is clear in the selection of works shown in the Mildred Zaradnicek Art Gallery,” visual arts instructor Valerie Innella Maiers said. “Her art is evocative of the explorations of abstracted forms as subject matter that began in the early 20th century.”

Maiers said Held’s prints, pastels and paintings consider the liberation of color in a lyrical manner.

“Both abstracts and realistic portraits are showcased in this exhibition, offering a variety of media where the viewer can contemplate how line can direct perception of form,” Maiers said.

Under the direction of Joshua R. Mietz, DMA, the 7 p.m. concert will feature tunes from composer Aaron Copland and others. The lineup includes two marches by John Philip Sousa, “Resumption March” and “Manhattan Beach March,” as well as two tunes from Percy Aldridge Grainger, “Irish Tune From County Derry” and “Colonial Song.” Music to be performed by Copland includes “Lincoln Portrait” and excerpts from “Appalachian Spring.”

The Zahradnicek Gallery and Wheeler Concert Hall are located in the Music Building on the Casper College campus.
