Let’s say you’re in the mood for a nice, long walk.
And for art.
Yeah, you could really get into admiring some great art. Classical stuff. A little Monet. And maybe some of that modern stuff. Maybe some great sculpture.
Why not do both? Make a day trip to the North Carolina Art Museum.
The massive campus consists of 164 acres of fields and woods interlaced with more than 5 miles of trails. Many of the trails are bicycle friendly so you can always bring your bikes along. A pond features your basic wildlife of turtles and frogs and birds (including kingfishers who are working hard to keep the frog population down). Numerous gigantic sculptures also dot the paths.
Inside the two main buildings are collections spanning 5,000 years, from Egyptian mummies to an all-blue modern painting mounted on an oddly-shaped canvas. Among the works are those of Peter Paul Rubens, Raphael, Sandro Boticelli, Monet, Augustus Rodin, and Andrew Wyeth. The “people’s art” museum and campus are free to the public. There is also a snack bar and gift shop.
The museum also tends to feature special, temporary exhibits for which there is an additional charge.

The current ticketed exhibit, “To Take Shape and Meaning,” is a celebration of modern American Indian art. Organized by guest curator Nany Strickland Fields, a member of the Lumbee tribe, it “features works by 75 indigenous artists from over 50 tribes throughout the United States and Canada, including eight from North Carolina,” according to the museum website. It runs through June 28th
An outdoor stage is also on the grounds and features programs throughout the summer from jazz to films. You can take a glance at this year’s programming here.
