SOUTHERN MARYLAND — The Color & Light Society of Southern Maryland continues bringing original artwork, creative programming and hands-on community art experiences to events and spaces throughout the region.
Made up of more than 30 artists from across Southern Maryland, the Color & Light Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local artists, encouraging artistic growth and sharing visual art with the broader community. Members create a wide range of original artwork, including painting, pottery, sculpture, photography, jewelry, woodworking, glasswork, mixed media, watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel and encaustic art.

Rather than operating from a traditional gallery space, Color & Light artists participate throughout the community at exhibitions, public events, arts partnerships, local venues, workshops and special programs. The organization refers to this approach as a “Gallery Without Walls.”
Through that mission, the organization works to make art more visible, accessible and connected to everyday life in Southern Maryland.

Color & Light frequently provides free interactive art activities at local events, giving community members opportunities to meet artists, participate in creative experiences and contribute to shared community projects. Organizers said the activities are designed to welcome participants of all ages and experience levels.
The Society is sponsoring Uncorked & Unveiled: Island Edition on May 21, 2026, hosted by the St. Mary’s County Arts Council at Port of Leonardtown Winery. Members will attend to celebrate fellow artist Cindy Martin-Brennan, whose artwork was selected for the label of a new white wine release. The Society also will help lead an interactive activity during the event.

Color & Light is also supporting Raining Cats & Dogs — A Community Art Show on June 5, 2026. During the event, members will provide a free interactive community activity. Pottery artist Barbara Hak and other Color & Light artists created more than 20 animal figures for attendees to paint as part of the event. Organizers said the activity supports the event’s mission of bringing people together through art while raising awareness for a local animal-focused cause.
In addition to community events, Color & Light members participate in exhibitions, art shows, demonstrations, educational programs and collaborative projects throughout Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties. Upcoming events also include art shows at the Fenwick Inn, Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, St. Mary’s County Arts Council, Three Notch Theater and other community venues throughout 2026.
