Young artists, performers can prepare for college at UAB’s ArtPlay NextGen symposium Aug. 29

High school seniors preparing for college courses in the visual arts or theater performance can join a hands-on symposium Saturday, Aug. 29, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

ArtPlay NextGen: Visual Arts Portfolio and Theatre Audition Symposium is designed to empower emerging artists with expert feedback and practical resources to help them thrive in college auditions and portfolio reviews.

Students will rotate through stations led by college faculty, professional artists and industry specialists in a supportive space for growth, creativity and connection. The day includes a networking lunch, opportunities to meet peers and mentors, and a closing reflection designed to boost confidence and celebrate progress. Participants will leave with personalized feedback on their work, insight into what colleges look for, new connections with artists, educators and fellow students, and a resource packet with audition tips, portfolio guidelines and scholarship info.

ArtPlay NextGen will take place 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the historic ArtPlay House, 1006 19th St. South. Capacity is limited to ensure individualized attention, and advance registration is required. Registration is $15, which includes lunch. Register now through Aug. 25.

The symposium is presented by ArtPlay Community Education and the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Arts, in UAB’s Center for the Arts, and the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History.
