NMB: Meet The Artists And Make Art On June 8

The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] will host the ‘Meet the Artists and Make Art’ event on Saturday, June 8 with three visiting Azorean contemporary artists.

A spokesperson said, “Meet the Artists and Make Art! at the National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] on Saturday, June 8, from 12-2pm with three visiting Azorean contemporary artists. Susana Aleixo Lopes, Leonor Almeida Periera, and Filipe Franco are showcased in an upcoming NMB exhibition, Alternative Voices: A Perspective on Contemporary Art from the Azores.

“As part of the exhibition outreach, the Museum is offering this family friendly event with the artists who are visiting from Ponta Delgada, São Miguel. At the exhibit in Commissioner’s House, participants will be able to meet the artists, dive deeper into the artwork and experiment with the techniques of collage, modelling, drawing and painting. All three artists are inspired by the land and ocean of their homeland, and they have created a fun art activity for all ages that connects with their artwork on display. The activity will explore shape, colour, texture, light and shadow using natural elements like leaves, plants, stones, sand and soil and is free with Museum admission.

About the artists:

“Susana Aleixo Lopes [b. 1987, Azorean] chooses wood as her favourite medium. Fire— an energy that destroys, transforms and is a symbol of rebirth— is a recurrent element in her work. Her sculptures are visually strong yet delicate with hidden details one must look closely to discover. Lopes studied Visual Arts at the University of Porto and graduated in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts, Gdansk, Poland. Based in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores, she has participated in numerous exhibitions and artistic residencies at various international venues.

“Leonor Almeida Pereira [b.1971, Azorean] focuses on the atmosphere of special places, using layers of paint that are partially removed, leaving behind traces of time. Water, a defining element of the Azores landscape, is central to her painting, functioning as a metaphor for memory, identity and sense of belonging.

“Filipe Franco [b. 196,1 Azorean] experiments with organic materials he collected from his island home, such as sediments, volcanic mud, and charcoal that are filtered, dried and transformed to retain the natural colours and textures. Light and shadow enhance the presence of his dense and ethereal sculptures. Franco studied painting at Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual, Lisbon, where he also monitored and lectured painting. He has participated in several collective and individual exhibitions and developed public art projects. He currently lives and works in the island of São Miguel, Azores.”

NMB is a Bermuda Registered Charity No. 136. The Museum is open every day, 9:30am – 5pm [last admission 4pm].
