PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Artists filled downtown Parkersburg as the Parkersburg Art Center held its Chalk the Block event leading into the Artoberfest on Market Street.
Artists came out and began drawing on the sidewalk with many ideas being put on display.
Michelle Fullerton, the arts outreach instructor at the Parkersburg Arts Center, said that everyone was welcome no matter what their artistic skill was.
“It’s for all ages,” Fullerton said. “It’s a very wide community draw, because it is open to all ages and all levels of skill. Just something fun for the community to come out and do, especially on a beautiful day.”
The artists had similar reasons and enjoyment for coming down to Chalk the Block.
“Honestly, just to hang out with each other and our best friend,” said E.D. Risley
“I did this in middle school with our friend, and we ended up winning,” said Serenity Romine.
“I just felt I wanted to get do something new and enter a contest whether i win or not,” said Devan Gordon. I’m here just to have some fun and support the Parkersburg Art Center.”
“i did this last year and i really enjoyed it,” said Isabelle Packard. ” I just like making chalk art and I thought it would be cool to do it just in Parkersburg.”
Even though there was a prize at the end, it was all for fun and spending time out in the community.
“it’s so much fun, especially blending just the way the chalk works. It’s just so fun, and it’s really nice to relax,” Romine added.
“It is fun to just come out here and watch everyone else how they do theirs because of their different skills and different types of using these chalks,” Gordan added.
“Art is for everyone, and anytime it can be a therapeutic thing for you,” Fullerton said. Even to get you out of the house to come join your community or some friends, it is fun and creative.”
