Artist loses her life in tragic accident – news


There is widespread grief in West Mayo following the tragic death of a woman who lost her life in a drowning accident on Sunday.

The woman has been named locally as Cathy Hughes. Ms Hughes, who was aged in her 60s was a member of one of Westport’s most successful and best-known families.

She drowned at Old Head on Sunday despite efforts to save her. A postmortem was due to be conducted today.

The sad passing of Ms Hughes has stunned her homeplace and her adopted city of Galway where she was a leading light in art circles.

A hugely talented artist, Ms Hughes had been living in Salthill, Co Galway but regularly returned to her native county and was a frequent visitor to Westport and Louisburgh.

One of a family of 13, the landscapes of Louisburgh and Old Head influenced much of her art.

Her mother, Maura Kelly, was a cousin of legendary Hollywood actress Grace Kelly, and began the Irish craft and knitwear business Carraig Donn Industries.
