The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Neue Galerie New York have announced a historic partnership that will result, in 2028, in the integration of the Neue Galerie into the New York institution.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art continues its heritage expansion strategy. The New York institution has announced the integration of the Neue Galerie New York beginning in 2028, under an agreement described as historic by both parties.
Founded by Ronald S. Lauder twenty-five years ago, the museum specializing in early 20th-century Austrian and German art will retain its own identity and its location on Fifth Avenue while joining the Met ecosystem.
The Met’s European modern art expansion
Through this operation, the Metropolitan Museum is significantly strengthening its European modern art offering. The Neue Galerie houses some of the most iconic works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Max Beckmann, including the famous Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, which has become an iconic piece of Viennese Expressionism over the years.
By bringing these collections together under one umbrella, the Met secures access to one of the most important collections of Germanic and Austrian art outside Europe.
The partnership is also part of a heritage transmission initiative led by the Lauder family. Ronald S. Lauder and his daughter Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer plan to donate thirteen major works from their private collection to enrich the Met’s collections.
Among them are Die Tänzerin by Gustav Klimt, Die Russische Tänzerin Mela by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Galleria Umberto by Max Beckmann. Additional works by Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Franz Marc are expected to follow in the coming years.
“Ronald Lauder is an extraordinary collector. Among his many areas of expertise, Austrian and German fin-de-siècle art holds a very special place. Ronald created a museum that is itself a work of art, deeply reflecting his passion, knowledge, and philanthropic commitment,” said Max Hollein, Director and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A fund created by the Lauder family
Beyond the artistic donations, the operation is supported by a significant financial commitment. The Lauder family will contribute to a fund dedicated to ensuring the long-term preservation of the Neue Galerie as well as its operational integration into the Met. Several major patrons and trustees of the New York museum have also participated in financing the project.
“Over the past twenty-five years, the Neue Galerie has earned a reputation for excellence thanks to the quality of its research, exhibitions, publications, and creations presented within its Design Shop. Through the commitment of our teams, we have fulfilled our mission: creating a leading museum dedicated to Austrian and German art and design from the early 20th century. I am delighted that it can now benefit from a permanent home within the Met,” announced Renée Price, founding director of the Neue Galerie.
This announcement comes at a particularly significant moment for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, just days after the 2026 Met Gala. Held on May 4, this year’s Costume Institute benefit gala was themed Costume Art, exploring how fashion interacts with art history and representations of the body. As usual, Anna Wintour chaired the event alongside Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams this year.
The gala also marked the opening of the Costume Art exhibition, conceived by Andrew Bolton for the Costume Institute. Presented from May 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027, in the new Condé Nast Galleries, the exhibition brings together more than 400 silhouettes, artworks, and historical objects to explore five millennia of representations of the dressed body.
