The Hyde Collection will be highlighting Women’s History Month with an Art After Hours tour, exploring the museum’s collection “Women and Art,” on Thursday, March 21. The special exploration of the collection has a focus on the various roles of women from the Renaissance into the 20th Century and how art has reinforced or challenged those roles.
The tour is facilitated by a trained guide from 6 to 8 p.m.
Katelyn Foley, curator of Education & Engagement, said celebrating the role of women in society is a story that The Hyde Collection engages in daily, through the story of their founders Charlotte and Louis Hyde. The pair collected art of European and American artists, and as Charlotte continued to build their collection after her husband’s death for nearly 30 years, the museum’s celebration focuses on her legacy of creating a public museum for the community.

“One piece that we are excited to include on this tour is Estelle in a Red Hat from 1876 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Many artworks throughout the ages depict women as idealistic, at times literally as goddesses. In the piece, Estell is portrayed realistically. This tour will encourage discussion around the role of women in society throughout history, as depicted in artwork on view, and the impact that women continue to have on our community,” Foley said.
Following the tour, guests will have the opportunity to explore the other newly opened exhibitions, including Venetian Vistas which showcases the enchanting city of Venice.
Northway Brewing Company will provide beer tastings and additionally, a free drop-in style program is open to all ages in the art studio from 5 to 7:30 p.m. to experiment with a variety of collage techniques.
The Hyde is one of the Northeast’s exceptional small art museums with distinguished European and American art collections. Throughout the years, the Museum has expanded considerably from the historic Hyde home. It includes a modern museum complex with an auditorium, classroom, five galleries, and a state-of-the-art storage facility.

With 25 years of experience in the public school setting and a master’s degree in educational administration, Painter is excited to explore museum education and utilize artwork as a primary resource for art appreciation and exploration. She aims to develop programs that provide inclusive access to The Hyde Collection, fostering meaningful engagement with art for all audiences.
Toni Nastasi, Museum Educator
Bringing her background as a local artist and experience in agriculture education, Nastasi is enthusiastic about planning and facilitating a diverse range of educational programming for youth, families, adults, and students. She aims to foster new creative ways of connecting with the community while providing resources specifically tailored to local artists.
Janek Palat, Preparator and Museum Technician
With a diverse background in documentary film, woodworking, and artisanal baking, Janek brings a unique blend of technical skills and creativity to his role. He is responsible for installing and de-installing exhibitions, handling art, and maintaining galleries and historical buildings, utilizing his passion for problem-solving and improvisation.
