Ditchling Museum of Art and Craft, near Hassocks, has been temporarily closed since February and will now remain shut indefinitely as trustees review its future and business model to ensure financial sustainability.
In an email to supporters, The Board of Trustees for the museum expressed gratitude to donors who have supported the venue during its closure, including the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
All items in the museum’s collection will remain safe and secure, the board said, with the building protected and regularly accessed for security.
The museum had planned for a redevelopment of its dye garden but this has now been postponed.
The project has been funded and work will restart once the museum’s future is more secure, museum bosses said.
Volunteers are currently unable to be in the building but the museum has advised people to continue to write if they would like to help when it reopens.
The organisation’s general email account will continue to be monitored, though the trustees warn that responses may be delayed.
The museum was originally founded in 1985 and celebrates Ditchling’s legacy as an arts and crafts hub in the 20th century.
It underwent an extensive £2.3 million redevelopment in 2013, introducing purpose-built galleries and a collection store.
