Brighton’s Stow & Rift gallery opens with Karl Allen show

Stow & Rift Gallery in Brighton will launch on Saturday, November 29, with a show by artist Karl Allen.

The opening coincides with the Winter Artists Open Houses programme in Brighton and Hove.

Mr Allen said: “My vision for the gallery is to bring monthly shows by artists from around the UK who will curate a more immersive gallery experience.”

Located in a Grade II-listed house in the city’s historic Lanes, the gallery takes its name from two words in its what3words address.

The first exhibition will feature 12 works by Mr Allen, who was born in Croydon and is now based in London.

The pieces explore childhood memories through a blend of figurative and abstract styles, using acrylic and pastel.

The show also incorporates audio recordings of conversations from Brighton beach, edited into soundscapes.

Visitors are encouraged to listen to the audio while viewing the paintings.

The exhibition begins in the basement and continues through the house, ending in a child’s bedroom on the top floor.

Stow & Rift Gallery, at 7 Bartholomews, will be open across three weekends during Artists Open Houses: November 29 and 30, and December 6, 7, 13 and 14.
