KOKOMO, Ind. —When Abby Carman began planning her first art exhibition, she considered the qualities she had been seeking in her own work — lightness, airiness, a feeling of delicacy. Those qualities inspired the new exhibit opening Wednesday in the Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery.

Ethereal, featuring artwork in a variety of mediums, continues through Thursday, June 27. Carman, who graduated in May, selected the included paintings, drawings, sculpture, cyanotypes, video, and mixed media works as the gallery curatorial intern.

“A lot of the kind of work I’ve been doing over the past year has this ethereal quality, extremely delicate and very intricate,” said Carman, from Kokomo. “It has this other worldly vibe to it. I wanted to find works that also hold these qualities.”

As curator, Carman created the concept for the exhibition, put out a call for entries, selected pieces for inclusion, and placed each piece in the gallery. As a New Media, Art, and Technology graduate, the experience gave her insight into a potential career in her field.

“It helped me see the professional side of being an artist, and how a gallery works, and the effort it takes to make a show,” she said.

Ethereal concludes with a closing reception from 4 to 6 p.m. June 27 in the Gallery, in the IU Kokomo Library Building, 2300 S. Washington St. Admission and parking are free.

The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
