Join artist Bernadette Smith as she discusses her exhibition, Legacies, at Hurstville Museum & Gallery.
Reflecting on work undertaken during her Georges River Artist Residency at Carss Park, Bernadette Smith will discuss the way her research has been translated into a series of artworks now on display in the Dragon’s Lair Gallery.
Smith’s visual research began by examining the social, conservation and recreational nexus of the eco-system around Kogarah Bay. Initially concentrating on the water itself by photographing around the bay at different times of the day, the series developed into Reflexions on Gamay, a moving projection of selected stills. During this time, Smith became increasingly aware that she was documenting a constantly modified coastal landscape that embodied ongoing colonial impacts. Influenced by historical perspectives, Smith created a second series of photographs that contemplates her own migrant and settler ancestry, and how this intersects with colonial impacts on nature and First Nations people.
Smith will discuss her research, photographic methodologies, and the way visual and philosophical meditations on decolonisation and climate justice have been created by blending documentary and fine art techniques such as superimposition and selective focus.
