A joint Wexford-Wales multidisciplinary arts project at an international music festival has received grant support from Culture Ireland.

Beyond Two Shores, combining visual art and jazz, will participate at the annual Aberjazz international festival in Fishguard in August.

This is the third occasion Culture Ireland has supported the latest cultural initiative between the two communities on opposite sides of the Irish Sea.

The Wexford initiative is one of 149 funded projects to promote Irish arts globally through Culture Ireland’s Regular Grants Programme, covering dance, film, literature and music.

“Culture Ireland’s support helps generate new opportunities and grow audiences for Irish art outside of Ireland,” said Beyond Two Shores programmer, Tom Mooney.

Representing Wexford in the visual arts will be work by two Wexford-based artists, Michael Mulcahy, a member of Aosdana, and Paddy Lennon, at the West Wales Arts Centre.

Michael’s first public exhibition was in 1981. Within 12 years, in 1994 he had two major national exhibitions at the Hugh Lane gallery of modern art, and Taylor galleries in Dublin. As well as many more national exhibitions since, he has exhibited in New-York, London, Paris, Brussels, the Museum of Modern Art in Seoul and at Wex-Art.

A strong and integral part of Paddy’s celebrated work is his understanding of the principles of good draughtsmanship, observation, structure and discipline. Paddy has had many solo shows throughout Ireland and abroad.

Also flying the flag for Wexford at Fishguard is the Sharon Clancy Trio, a headliner at Pepper’s jazz club during the international Aberjazz festival.

Singer Sharon is a regular headliner at Jazz at Johnstown with sold out shows in December and February and appears next at Bank Lane in Waterford on May 24 next.
