BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. — Bernalillo County is inviting regional artists to submit proposals for the first publicly-funded COVID memorial public art project in the United States.
The project will become the New Mexico COVID Memorial. It is set to be located at a recreation complex adjacent to Isleta Amphitheater in Albuquerque.
The request for qualifications will open July 11 and close Aug. 1. They are looking for six artists who, if selected, will receive $11,000 through Bernalillo County’s 1.5% for Art Program. The budget will cover the design and collaboration with a local fabricator to produce the panels.
Artists must be a resident of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Arizona, Colorado or Texas.
Each artist will create a “unique, two-dimensional concepts for perforated metal panels that will line the memorial’s ‘pilgrimage path’.” The panels, each measuring four feet by eight feet, will feature cut-metal designs that cast light and shadow onto the adjacent pathway.
