Barnstaple artist shortlisted for Wildlife Artist of the Year 2024


A local artist based near Barnstaple has been shortlisted for the prestigious Wildlife Artist of the Year 2024 award. 

Sarah Rhiannon, who specialises in painting African wild dogs, has garnered attention for her vibrant and expressive portrayal of wildlife.

The announcement comes as a pleasant surprise to Sarah, who only began painting in 2020. 

She said: “I’ve always grown up surrounded by nature, spending lots of time outdoors and exploring the wildlife on Exmoor. That connection to nature has always been a part of me, which eventually led me to working with animals and studying zoology.”

Sarah’s shortlisted painting, titled The Dozen at Dusk, captures the essence of a pack of African wild dogs against the backdrop of a twilight sky.

She said: “I’m drawn back to painting African wild dogs because of their character and social interactions. They’re fascinating creatures, and I find joy in depicting their playful and dynamic nature.”

The Wildlife Artist of the Year competition received  entries from artists in 46 countries this year, making Sarah’s achievement even more remarkable.

She said: “It’s quite surreal to be included among so many talented artists from around the world. I’m just honoured to be part of it.”

The awards ceremony is scheduled for July 1, where category winners will be announced. Despite the anticipation, Sarah remains focused on the opportunity to showcase her artwork at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London.

She said: “It’s such a beautiful space, and seeing my painting displayed there would be a dream come true.”

In addition to her recognition in the Wildlife Artist of the Year competition, Sarah will also be participating in Devon Open Studios from September 7 to 22.

Visitors will have the chance to explore Sarah’s studio, learn about her artistic journey, and view her captivating wildlife paintings.

Reflecting on her journey as an artist, Sarah expresses gratitude for the support and opportunities that have come her way.

She said “It’s been an incredible experience to discover my passion for painting and to share my love for wildlife through art. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.”
