Lawmakers plan to formally introduce legislation next month that would protect artists from being mimicked by artificial intelligence without their consent, a top Senate Judiciary Committee Democrat said Tuesday. But thorny questions around free speech and creativity could complicate regulation.
Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), chair of the committee’s intellectual property panel, made the announcement during a hearing examining a bipartisan draft bill he released with Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) in October. Known as the NO FAKES Act, the proposal seeks to shield artists from unauthorized AI-generated replicas of them.
