The site is now powered almost entirely by a newly installed solar array, which will generate 89,624 kWh annually, enough to power the café, galleries, offices, and accommodation across the 120-acre estate.
The new EV charging offer coincides with the opening of EXTRACTION, a major spring exhibition exploring the environmental, cultural, and psychological impacts of energy systems in Scotland.
Nicky Wilson, director of Jupiter Artland, said: “EXTRACTION examines West Lothian’s complex relationship with energy, from shale oil extraction to North Sea infrastructure.
“Alongside the exhibition, we are taking practical action by powering the estate through renewable energy generated on site and offering free EV charging for visitors.
“This reflects our belief that the transition to cleaner energy should support access to landscape and contemporary art, not create additional barriers.”
The solar field is expected to save 17,921 kg of CO₂ each year and forms part of Jupiter Artland’s long-term decarbonisation plans.
The exhibition places particular focus on West Lothian’s historic shale industry and the surrounding landscape.
Running from April 11, 2026, EXTRACTION features work by artists Carol Rhodes, John Gerrard, Marguerite Humeau, Siobhan McLaughlin, and John Latham.
Their installations engage directly with the layered energy histories of the estate, from 19th-century shale oil production to North Sea infrastructure and contemporary renewables.
Jupiter Artland’s public programme will include artist talks, curator-led tours, and creative workshops.
These events will begin on Earth Day, Wednesday April 22.
