Art Gallery of NSW director Michael Brand on his favourite Sydney restaurants and weekend rituals

Sunday morning | I try not to do work-related things. Mornings are for taking Frankie out for a longer walk. Often I take her down through Rushcutters Bay out to the end of Darling Point. You walk past the former HMAS Rushcutter naval base, where my father did his wartime training. I also walk Frankie down to Beare Park in Elizabeth Bay. At low tide a little beach appears and she just loves running up and down like crazy. But that’s where the [January 29] shark attack occurred, so we’ve been a bit nervous. Luckily, she’s big-boned so she doesn’t really float and she doesn’t go out beyond where she can stand.

Sunday afternoon | Life admin and preparing for the week ahead, so I might have a little bit of reading through documents or checking out my emails. And then some photo editing. I like doing that; I like working with photographs.

I also love music, so I’ll read music reviews or put things in playlists that I can use while I’m driving. I listen to a lot of very new music.

Sunday night | We’re pretty much always at home. Before COVID, we almost never watched television. We just had the TV there for the occasional AFL match. But of course during lockdowns we got totally hooked on all these series, so we sometimes do watch quite a few of those, or a movie. Over the Easter weekend we watched season five of Fargo. It’s really good.

We have fantasies of going to bed early, but it never quite works. Then on Monday morning the week starts all over again.
