The Art Gallery of Swan Hill is inviting the community to dress up and enjoy an unforgettable evening of fine dining, entertainment and outstanding art at this year’s Art Auction and Gala Dinner on Saturday 21 February from 6.30pm.
Originally scheduled to be held last year, the Art Auction and Gala Dinner was postponed allowing the Gallery to seize a rare and exciting opportunity – to host the event in its brand new, spectacular Art Gallery of Swan Hill.
Gallery Director, Ian Tully said the event would be more than just an art auction, the evening will mark a celebration of this impressive new space, offering guests a chance to experience the Gallery in a vibrant, social setting.
The event will showcase artworks generously donated by both local artists and creators from across Victoria and New South Wales. Among the highlights are works by Graeme Drendel, whose highly realistic and meditative paintings are represented in the National Gallery of Australia and who won the prestigious 2022 Doug Moran Portrait Prize. Guests can also bid on punchy, socially aware assemblages by Glenn Morgan, a celebrated artist held in all major state galleries, and pieces by rising star Matthew Clarke, a finalist in the Archibald, Sulman and Wynne Prizes.
Local talent will also be showcased, including contributions from First Nations artist Kenita-Lee McCartney, Swan Hill-based weaver and educator Suzanne Connelly-Klidomitis, and ceramicist Liz Maddy, whose dramatic pit-fired vessels are already represented in the Gallery’s permanent collection. The evening will also feature live entertainment from local vocalist Rianne Quaife.
Mr Tully said the evening is a chance to celebrate creativity, generosity and the opening of an extraordinary new chapter for the Gallery.
“By bidding, you’re not just purchasing original art – you’re contributing to the legacy of the Gallery’s collection and helping activate this incredible new space for the community,” Mr Tully said.
He added that the event also highlights the importance of art in building vibrant communities.
“Art brings people together, sparks conversation and enriches our sense of place. Hosting this event in the new Gallery makes that impact even more tangible,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Cr Terry Jennings said the event marks an important milestone for the region.
“The Art Auction and Gala Dinner is a celebration of where we’ve come from and where we’re heading.
“This new Gallery is a significant investment in our cultural future, and this event gives the community a chance to experience the space while supporting the growth of a world-class collection,” Cr Jennings said.
Guests will be welcomed with canapés and complimentary drinks on arrival, before enjoying a two-course meal. The evening will be hosted by comedienne and MC Alyce Fisher, with a local auctioneer bringing energy to the bidding as artworks go under the hammer.
