The funding is a result of Benalla Rural City Council successfully applying to the Federal Government’s Growing Regions Fund, which has led to $2.965 million being allocated.
Mayor Danny Claridge said the project will see the renewal of the gallery’s climate control system, refurbishment of existing gallery spaces, improved visitor amenities and cafe, and collections storage and management.
“This is a great day for our beloved art gallery,” Cr Claridge said.
“The substantial financial support from the Australian Government will be combined with the existing $3 million grant generously provided by the Victorian Government.
“The additional funding will allow us to enhance the cultural fabric of Benalla and provide a space where art and community come together.
“The combined funding represents a significant investment in our city’s cultural infrastructure.
“It’s not just about the art, it’s about fostering community spirit, promoting local talent, and enhancing our city’s appeal to visitors.”
The Growing Regions Fund is a key initiative of the Federal Government, aimed at supporting regional development and community programs.
“We are deeply grateful for this support and are excited about the opportunities this funding will bring to our community,” Cr Claridge said.
“We look forward to sharing more details about the planned enhancements to our art gallery in the coming months.“
