          • In a countdown to its 100th Anniversary, NMHAM embraces a New Museum Model

SANTA FE — The Spanish Colonial Arts Society’s (SCAS) recently renamed Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum (NMHAM) has announce, as of July 31, 2024, the Museum is free to all visitors. Additionally, membership is also free.

“Our board and staff believe strongly in the value of what we have to offer both to our immediate community and to visitors from around the world. We could not have taken this step without the past and ongoing support of our members and donors who share the same belief,” Executive Director Jennifer Berkley said.

Museum members who have joined at any level in the past will be automatically renewed as Friends of the Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum and SCAS.  Membership dues will no longer be required to join when both an email and mailing address are provided. Basic membership benefits remain the same for all members: free entrance to educational events, such as lectures; by-appointment access to the Stockman Collections Center and Hale Mathews Research Library; invitations to members-only exhibition previews and events; discount of 15%  on books in SCAS bookstore; invitation to a yearly appreciation party; subscription to the SCAS monthly e-newsletters, including advance notice of special events; discount of 10% at Museum Hill Café. Special interest groups offering unique opportunities for members are under development and will be announced soon.

Founded in 1925 in recognition of the regional Nuevo Mexicano art of New Mexico, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society is the only nonprofit in the United States to continually collect and exhibit the regional art of Hispano New Mexico from the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection possesses invaluable art and artifacts from over 500 hundred years, spanning four continents that ground the regional art form within a global context. The entire collection is housed in and accessible to the public at the Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum, located on Museum Hill. The Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum, opened in 2002, is committed to exhibiting, conserving and understanding the cultural heritage of New Mexico and its global context, past, present and future.

Next year, 2025, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society, one of only a few non-profits still operating in Santa Fe after 100 years, will celebrate its centennial with a series of exhibitions, events, and lectures.

“Everyone should have access to their history and culture, and I am very excited to help make it that much more accessible. I think this is an important move for us and I am looking forward to seeing new faces. I am so thankful for the support that allows us to move forward in this endeavor,” E. Boyd Curator  Jana Gottshalk said.
