Flint museum returns sculpture of Hindu god Ganesha because of ties to alleged art smuggler

FLINT, MI — A sandstone sculpture has been returned to New York City by the Flint Institute Arts, which says the object it purchased more than a decade ago appears to have ties to a man authorities have called one of the most prolific art smugglers in the world.

Subhash Kapoor, who owned a New York art gallery, was indicted for conspiracy to traffic stolen antiquities after an international investigation dubbed “Operation Hidden Idol.”
