(Camden, ME) Carver Hill Gallery presents Finding Home, an exhibition featuring 24 works by artist Adam Umbach. Known for experimenting with abstraction, geometric painting, and expressionism within his work, Umbach’s chosen subjects, which often repeat through differing bodies of work, belong to a personal and familial iconography. Though sourced from his life, Umbach’s paintings invite viewers to connect with this imagery by evoking their own experiences and memories. This exhibition will showcase Umbach’s latest works inspired by his time in Maine.
There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday, July 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at The Yellow Barn (located at 20 Winter Street in Rockland) during the Rockland First Friday Art Walk. The exhibition will be on view every day through July 28.
In his latest exhibition, the paintings represent the ways in which Umbach pondered the idea of finding home in different forms and at different stages of his life. Heavily influenced by his surroundings, including the maritime imagery and seaside colors from his time living in Maine, many of the paintings in this show feature boats and reference perseverance, shelter and fortitude.
According to the artist, “There have been times when home has seemed elusive, yet visible, as in the painting Light Home.” He continues, “In Father & Child, I return to the familiar sense of place that building with Legos gave me as a young boy. Legos feature in many of the paintings and evoke a nostalgia for childhood. Whimsical, playful titles such as Whaley and Racey Daze further explore this connection to early memories and a sense of child-like freedom.”
Umbach has participated in solo and group exhibitions up and down the Eastern Seaboard, has exhibited in art fairs nationwide including Moniker Art Fair, New York, Market: Art & Design, Miami, West Palm Beach, Bridgehampton, NY, and Philadelphia, and is included in notable private art collections across the U.S.

About Adam Umbach
Adam Umbach was born in Chicago, and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. After being inspired from an early age by the modern masters collection at the Art Institute of Chicago, he received his BFA in painting from the University of Wisconsin. Beginning his painting career with minimalist canvases based on the enigmatic names of color swatches, Umbach’s creative approach has expanded to experiments with abstraction, geometric painting, and expressionism. The evolution of Umbach’s painting is markedly influenced by his surroundings, from the maritime imagery and seaside colors from his time living in East Hampton, New York and Islesboro, Maine to the graphic style of New York City’s architecture and graffiti.
Umbach’s work pairs formalist explorations with photorealistic depictions of recognizable objects, including boats, toys such as rubber ducks and teddy bears, and pink flamingo lawn ornaments. A biographical painter, Umbach’s chosen subjects, which often repeat through differing bodies of work, belong to a personal and familial iconography.
