The design of an art collector’s home always strives to highlight the stunning pieces they have collected over the years. In these homes, art is not just something that hangs on stark white walls. It becomes an integral part of the space, and often times has unique functional purposes. Here is our selection of unique features that one can find only in an art collector’s home.

Traveller, music lover, avid reader, and art connoisseur are some of the adjectives Nishita Kamdar, principal architect at her eponymous studio, uses to describe her client who commissioned this project. The homeowner lives with his wife, their son, and his parents in this 2,800-square-foot apartment at Breach Candy in South Mumbai.
“Custom-made artefacts appear in obscure corners and make for interesting conversation starters. The carefully-curated pieces are kept monochromatic like the rest of the house that allowed us to play with forms rather than colours,” shares Kamdar. One of these artefacts is Davide Groppi’s ‘Moon’ installation that hangs above the dining table, and acts as a secondary light source for the area.

It began with a work of art. Interior designer Iram Sultan had fallen in love with a piece by Julien Segard and was hoping to include it in a client’s home she was working on. “I had recommended it so strongly that I had even placed it in a 3D render that I had created for them for that space,” shares the New Delhi-based designer, who sees art as an integral part of her interior design practice.
Art is what defines this project–indeed, it is what brought client and designer together in the first place. Every room features something from their extensive collection, and as you move from the living room into the family room, more pieces from the couple’s collection are revealed. In a corner of the family room, the Chamar Studio chair, a collectible design piece from æquō, foregrounds an artwork by Avdhesh Tamrakar. The striking blue of the chair adds to the already existing play of colours in the family room.
